Week Four

LECTURE

This week, we were given four workshop tasks to complete. The first task required us to visit the two websites, "Haggis Hunt" and Molossia.Org.

At first glance, both these websites appear to be authentic. But after only following a few hyperlinks it is obvious that they are 'spoofs'. A dead giveaway on Molossia, is that the weather is that of Dayton in Nevada, and not of Molossia.

The Molossia website.
» There’s a link on the front page addressed to teachers that says inside that the site is authentic despite what other people say. They shouldn’t have to do this if the site really was real.
» In the president’s speech he doesn’t talk about the republic but instead talks more about the site.
» The address of the republic doesn’t seem right
Republic of Molossia226 Mary Lane,Dayton, NV 89403
» The site has its own language even though Molossia is surrounded by the United States, also the letters are just a symbol font from word.

The Haggis Hunt website.
» The haggis facts are ridiculous.
» The word haggis actually means stuffed intestines
» The pictures of the animals on the site look like they have been edited and don’t actually have and pictures with backgrounds.
» The URL is .com meaning anyone could have made it unlike sites that are .gov .edu etc.

WORKSHOP

Task 2
a. Based on the URL www.martinlutherking.org I assume that the website will contain information on MLK and his political life. Also this is a .org site meaning it is intended for use by organizations that don’t have the requirements for other gTLDs, .org sites can be created by anyone so there is a chance the site isn’t fully authentic and could be a fake.

Task 3
My first impression by just reading over the home page is that the site is not authentic. This is mainly due to the yellow writing to the left of MLK’s picture saying things that don’t seem true about MLK and also the quote “I’m not a negro tonight” by MLK which I find very hard to believe just from what I have heard about him.

Task 4
I looked up MLK in Google and read a bit about his history, his speeches and what he has done politically and I am now fairly sure that this site is a fake, there is no way he could have been such a success if what this site says is true also if they had decent evidence to what they say then more people would know about it.
